Always keep a bag of frozen berries in the freezer., It’s easy to keep apple juice and coconut water on hand.When it’s frozen, gently transfer to a freezer bag and store in the freezer I lay it out on a tray and freeze the leaves. Sometimes I wash and strip the kale and tear it into small pieces.Wash, strip and discard the stems, wrap in tea towels or paper towels and stuff into a plastic or ziplock bag-kale waiting and ready for whatever. If it’s whole kale in a bunch or from your garden, prep the kale beforehand. If you buy kale washed and ready to eat like packaged baby kale, you are set.Canned pineapple chunks will do in a pinch. I had pineapple leftover from Pineapple and Tempeh Kebabs. It’s nice to cut it ahead of time–then there’s pineapple chunks for snacking. Unless you buy it pre-cut, you’ll need to peel and cut the pineapple.Triple berry and kale smoothie ingredient notes: (There are 9 grams of natural sugar in a cup of coconut water vs 24 grams in unfiltered apple juice.) Use all coconut water if you wish to lessen the sugar jolt. With kale in the recipe, I recommend fruit juice and/or coconut water instead of any kind of milk. Not so much any more, but sometimes I’ll dollop in a spoonful of plain yogurt. When pears are in season, I’ll add a pear half. (Affiliate links.) Frozen blueberries are pretty much the norm too. Along with the liquid goes a banana, plant-based protein powder and ground chia seeds. They’ve morphed from a basis of cow’s milk, to soymilk, almond milk, oat milk, and sometimes just plain water. ![]() The pineapple and apple juice add sweet acidity. Berries give the smoothie appealing mauve purple color, and offset the raw kale flavor (and color) that could be a turnoff for some. This triple berry and kale smoothie convinces me that kale is delicious in blender breakfasts. Thank goodness that along the way my out-the-door drink evolved to include fruit and protein powder, and no egg! We’re talking a blend of a raw egg, non-fat milk, sweet ’n low sugar substitute, and a splash of vanilla. Smoothies way back in college–don’t let this gross you out-were essentially eggnog. The yogurt and milk can be replaced with more milk, Greek yogurt, coconut milk, or almond milk. To make the smoothie you will need a few basic ingredients that can be easily interchanged with any of your favorite fruits. One of my favorite simple combos is apple and strawberry. If you can name it then I think I might have tried it now or then. I’ve tried a ton of different combos for smoothies. My kids love them as an alternative to ice-cream and I couldn’t be happier with the fact that they would take a smoothie over ice-cream! They are packed with tons of vitamins, calcium, and fiber. They are healthy, quick, delicious, and nutritious. If you’re anything like me then you probably enjoy smoothies all year round. We can’t go a day without making a smoothie or two. This refreshing smoothie is a great twist on the classic strawberry smoothie and will be sure to become a family favorite!
